How Do You Apply Gel Polish?

To apply gel polish correctly, follow these essential steps. Start by prepping your nails: trim, file, and buff to create a clean, dry surface, and push back your cuticles. It's crucial to remove any shine from the natural nail using a file or drill, particularly around the cuticle and edges. After sanding, use a brush to remove dust and clean the nails. For a salon-quality result at home, gather necessary materials: gel polish, a UV or LED lamp, nail file, nail buffer, lint-free wipes, cotton swabs, and rubbing alcohol.

Begin by thoroughly cleaning your nails to eliminate oils and residues. Shape your nails using a 180/240 grit file, then apply a base coat, followed by two thin coats of your chosen gel polish color—allowing each coat to set for about a minute in between. Ensure you apply each layer evenly, reaching the edges without touching the skin.

After applying the color, finish with a topcoat and cure in the lamp for long-lasting results. If you need to remove gel polish later, file the top layer, push back the cuticles, and trim any excess skin. With these detailed methods, you'll be well on your way to mastering gel polish application, achieving a glossy, chip-resistant manicure that lasts. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, utilizing these tips will enhance your nail game beautifully.

How Do I Choose A Magnetic Nail Polish?

Choose a magnetic nail polish color and design that appeals to you, considering the included magnet design. Magnetic nail polish consists of iron filings that react to a magnet, allowing for unique patterns on your nails. To achieve optimal results, proper application is key. Start by preparing your nails: remove any old polish, shape your nails, and ensure they’re clean.

Next, apply a base coat and let it dry completely. Follow this with a thin layer of your chosen magnetic polish. While it’s still wet, hover the magnet over your nail for a few seconds to create the design you want. Ensure you use a thick enough layer of polish for the magnetic particles to work effectively. The closer you hold the magnet, the more defined the effect will be.

This process can be repeated for each nail. It’s recommended to do one nail at a time for precise results. Explore different designs and trends in magnetic nail art, including options from brands like Sally Hansen and OPI. By following these steps carefully, you can create stunning velvet and cat-eye effects using magnetic nail designs. Enjoy experimenting with various colors, ensuring to shake the polish before use.

What Is Magnetic Nail Polish

What Is Magnetic Nail Polish?

Magnetic nail polish features iron filings that react to a magnet, enabling the creation of striking designs on the surface of nails. This guide covers essential information on applying magnetic nail polish for optimal results. At its core, magnetic nail polish utilizes small metal particles capable of forming interesting patterns when influenced by a magnet, generally provided on the lid of the polish bottle. The designs produced can vary, often appearing as vertical stripes or star shapes.

The science behind this innovative nail product is simple; magnets attract metal, causing the tiny metallic bits within the polish to align uniquely when a magnet is placed over the wet application. This technique has significantly transformed the nail art landscape by merging artistic expression and science. Magnetic gel polish, a variant, also incorporates magnetic particles that display mesmerizing effects when held up to a magnet.

As it continues to be a trending topic on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, many influencers show techniques for creating diverse nail patterns with magnetic polish. Although this polish isn’t a new concept, the stunning velvet-like finish it offers is visually captivating.

Remember, while the entire polish may not be magnetic, the minute particles mixed within it provide that eye-catching texture. Additionally, some polishes contain pleasant scents and are enriched with Vitamin E for skin hydration. For the best outcomes, keeping the nail in position on the magnet as the polish dries is crucial, resulting in bolder magnetic lines, especially for those with slender fingers.

Can You Use Magnetic Nail Polish On Both Hands

Can You Use Magnetic Nail Polish On Both Hands?

To use magnetic nail polish effectively, start with the first coat applied evenly across each nail, ensuring not to use the magnet during this step. This initial coat serves to create a smooth base color, preparing your nails for the magnetization process that will occur with the second coat. If you're unfamiliar with applying polish, consider having a friend assist you, especially on your dominant hand.

User experiences reveal various tips for maximizing the magnetic effect. Regardless of the magnetization technique, consistency in coat thickness and drying times is crucial, typically involving thin layers with approximately a minute of magnet exposure between each. It’s essential to roll the polish bottle to mix it well and activate the iron particles.

To achieve unique, textured designs with magnetic nail polish, apply it one nail at a time, allowing the first coat to dry before continuing. Each layer can build to your desired opacity, although a single coat is often sufficient, especially over darker bases. Remember, traditional nail polishes won’t respond to magnetic tools, as they lack the necessary metal particles.

All magnets compatible with magnetic nail polishes can function across different brands, ensuring versatility. When applying, maintain a stable position with both the painted nails and the magnet-holding hand secured to a surface for ease and control. With the right technique and patience, you can create stunning three-dimensional patterns on your nails, showcasing your creativity through this trendy art form.

  • Update 3+ years later: The potted cat eye gels shown in the article have been unavailable now for quite some time. Here are some of my other favorite shop options for cat eye colors. Zillabeau (code katie10) Lots of color options zillabeau.com NashlyNails (code katie10) more great options! nashlynails.com/collections/icegel-galaxy Also, in the article I state you should apply them over black. This is optional. The colors I use in the article have a sheer black base, so I recommend applying them over black to give you an opaque look and make the colors pop. However, years after filming this, there are now many different colors of cat eye, ranging from light to dark shades. So using a black base is not always necessary depending on the color and the look you’re trying to achieve.

  • I just started playing with gel polish and I’m in LOVE!!! I finally got some cat eye gel polish but was getting so frustrated thinking I got a bad product, then thought to myself man what if I’m doing it wrong, and I was only using the magnetic side to try and get that same effect. Thank you for a lovely tutorial, I learned a lot!!!

  • As soon as you did the second nail I was like uh WHAT! 😊 🤗 🤪 😃 I watched a live tik tok ad and was sold on cat eye gel, though I had NO UV anything. After getting it and trying, I wished I had just bought press on nails that already had the design! Thank you for lifting a huge weight off of me. I can’t wait to clean my nails and try again!

  • Thank you!! Veryhelpful!! I wonder if you’ve done or would do a article showing how to get it to the point of the nail tip? I see a swipe maybe up one side, then down the other, then they sort of tap it to the tip! But I can’t figure it out. You’re a great explainer! I totally subscribed just now!💜💜💜

  • Thank you so much for doing this article! I just ordered cat eye gel and the magnets. I didn’t know about curing the nail ASAP after creating the pattern for it to stay bolder looking. I would have waited until I was done with them all then cured them. They’re all beautiful but, I love the pattern one the best.

  • Thank you so much. I’m not that much of an girly girl, and add to that the fact that i don’t read instructions, just like a dude (plus my eyesight is horrible). Your article was great and I finally know how to do this properly (you should have seen the mess I made! You would have had a good chuckle). Thank you so much for your help. Wish me luck!

  • Great tutorial. For the first time in my life I have nails. Long enuf to polish and get a manicure. I’m 68 yesterday and absolutely love turquoise the gemstone. My request is this. Turquoise has many characteristics one of which is the gold, bronze, or black matrix that runs through the gemstone itself. Could you possibly show me how to achieve nail art that resembles a turquoise gemstone?

  • Best tutorial I’ve found on using cat eye gel, so thank you so much. I’m wondering how would I do cat eye on pre-painted store bought press on’s? I’ve searched all of YouTube and no one has ever done that. Is it possible to do and should the nails be buffed first or just primer then go in with a base and the cat eye gel? Would certainly appreciate a article on this and you’d be the first because like I said I’ve searched all of YouTube and found no ones tried it. Thanks again for your content. New subbie here 🙋‍♀️

  • First off Great article!! Great job demonstrating how this gel is used with the magnets!! Now you said you were going to “cure” them, what exactly did you do to cure them? Ultraviolet Light or something else or another way? Could you elaborate for me and maybe a good idea for another article for you? Thank you for your time making and explaining how to use this polish and magnets!!

  • Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much, it’s such a simple process but for some reason for me I just couldn’t get the magnet to give me the desired effect but after perusal your tutorial now I know what I was doing wrong so thank you so much! And my favorite design that you did was definitely the stamp nail! Well done ❤️🌹

  • Very clear! Makes it so visible what can be done! It’s really useful. The stamp is truly cool. But the double layer and the one where it looked to be all black and then gave pink was also very nice. The one thing I wish everyone would be clear about – though I assume you mentioning ‘ curing’ each time, basically answers it – is if you can use cateye polishes without UV/Led, and if not : what is best & how long. I have a very special (and extremely painful ) form of finger eczema, and it flares up every time I use my lamp 😞, even with the lowest setting. I’m going to try one more time and then it is byebye lamp.

  • I bought a cat eye polish which was a blue chrome color. But when I used the magnet (same one you have that I got from a local nail supply place) only about half of the cat eye formula went in the middle. I held the magnet there so long, and got super close. Still it would not collect all of the cat eye pigment in a nice straight line like the green nail. I ended up with a galaxy type nail with a faint little stripe in the middle. Are all cat eye formulas different? Or could it be a cheap magnet?

  • Loved this article! Just ordered both cat eye gel polish you showed on this article. Can’t wait to try it. I will def be using this article my first time. What black gel polish do you recommend. I wasn’t sure and went with opi. Hopefully it works well. Can I just use my top coat from my dip to top coat it. I have tack free gel polish and also just the top coat for revel nails dip powder. Will one of those work or can you also recommend something for that?

  • @nailsbykatiedutra Loved this article, I just learned about this cat eye polishes..beautiful! I have a question because I didn’t see of heared you say it, but did you dried/cured the gel polish before you put the stamp on? And them cure and top coat and cure it again? I’m going to watch some more of your article’s, I just discovered your website:) 🙋🏼‍♀️💕 Tamara from Holland 🌹🧀
