There’s something really truly beautiful about this series that’s absolutely indescribable. At first glance Berserk appears to be an anime/manga solely based around brutal fights, gore and the dark ages. But in reality, it’s about a man’s dream and the power it holds. The power to change the world, to protect others and to fuel one’s very essence. Lives of men come and go, but dreams can transcend lives and be inherited as a will. This series taught me to fight for a cause bigger than my own survival and to hold onto all the wonder I have about the universe.
The reason why Griffith connected with guts on a deep fundamental level, right from the start, is because he realised he and Guts are the same; Two young men, looking for purpose in life. It starts with Griffith having a purpose, a goal, and overpowering guts with it. As time passes, Guts starts realizing bit by bit that he looks up to Griffith because of it. The fire of Griffith’s purpose giving Guts the first bit of warmth he so much desired. Yet, as time passes once again, Guts starts realizing that he himself is void of purpose, and that the man who he looks up to looks down on him because of it. This sets up a chain of events in which guts slowly but surely starts developing his goal, and that is to find HIS purpose in life. The difference between Guts and Griffith in this however, is that Griffith seeks it in others (the princess, the kingdom, the band of the hawk) while Guts seeks it WITHIN HIMSELF. This difference allows Guts to turn the table on Griffith, overpowering him and allowing him to leave his Band of the Hawk. The reason why Griffith starts breaking down after this, is because he realizes that Guts was successful where he was not. Guts found that true purpose can only be found within oneself, and it is now Griffith who realizes that he is empty (but also in his view, tainted and corrupted). Later, Guts realizes that he has people whom he loves, and who love him back. Kentaro Miura is setting Guts up to be the hero who conquered the dragon that is all that Guts embodies; Trauma, self-doubt, purposelessness, Anger, confusion.

Sonder is the realization that everybody around you, even strangers, are living a life just as complex as yours. Sometimes your hurting so bad and you feel your the only one. But after all your hardships you start to realize that everybody is so unique and you aren’t the only one. Everybody lives are so indescribably different and there is no way you will ever understand their lives. To sum it up you are realizing that your not the only one living with such chaos and complexity. All people lives are unique, strange, chaotic, and complex, just like yours. Your not alone. I lay in bed so deep in my thoughts, the darkness was all around me while, slowly, the sonder started to kick in. I then realized that not only me, but all seven point fifty three billion people in this world which they are constantly living despite my personal lack of awareness of it.

We are the passerbys who were simply walking by the flames you ignited and chose to warm ourselves up. But you and our meeting didn’t end there. This torn damaged man, who does this act of true genuine herculean heroism and he doesn’t even find any value in his actions. Hell he despises his own lifestyle and here he is questioning it after going so many years on autopilot now he’s asking himself is there more to his own existence. I’ve learned alot about myself from Guts and fictional character and im so happy I got the privilege to read the manga as far as it went to see his beautiful art and dialogue.
Countless have been the times I’ve listened to this speech. Reading your story, Dr. Miura, made me more appreciative of life, gave me courage in my darkest days, the theme of Guts accompanied me in my long walks around the county and small town for years now. I am fairly new to anime and manga in general, but so far nothing will ever top the story, characters, art, and love you crafted over the last 30 years.

I fight because I know nothing else.” I bet many of us can relate to this quote, we might not be battling 100 men with a sword for our lives but we struggle to live every single day in this cruel world, I’m not talking about those 12 year olds who say their life is trash because they got no friends at school, I mean people who really struggle in life. People who have nowhere to go back home to, nothing waits for them, not family, not friends or loved ones, no one. We fight because we know nothing else, because we don’t want to die, we just want the pain to stop.
After hearing about Miura’s passing I feel like Guts. I watch as the Berserk fandom like the Band of the Hawk, have pooled their small flames under the fire that is Miura, while I’m like Guts, I have nothing to give, and I’m just someone who’s stopped to warm themselves by the Bonfire that is Berserk, before I move on…and more than anything else, that hurts the most.
I can relate so much to the part of the speech about only going on because you don’t want to die. I’ve struggled for years because of my survival instincts kicking in and always making sure I make it no matter how hard or unlikely it was. Battled through deaths of loved ones, betrayal by the people I loved, drug addiction and homelessness. But no matter what I kept going and kept improving.
Miura created his own bonfire, a community and legacy that brought us all together in love and respect for this masterful series. I’m still in shock that he’s gone. Berserk has been a part of my life since I picked it up as a teen, and even now I consider it a huge influence. I don’t want that to end here. I don’t want this to be the end of Berserk, nor of the community that rose around it. I want others to be able to experience and feel the same way we did, and to feel inspired and moved as we are. I recently finally started reading Berserk and I can say for the first time in my life I can point and look at a piece of media and say that this story will stay with me for the rest of my life, I have the privilege to look at Berserk and say you have changed me permanently. Rest easy Miura, and thank you.
What surprises me more is how Casca has changed to. Before she would nag or fight with Guts almost every moment something goes ass up between them. Casca wouldn’t even give Guts a moment to either explain himself or she’ll just slam charges onto him like no tomorrow. I mean like that one scene right after the encounter with Zodd; Casca wished Guts to die and she would only treat him less than a person most of the time. There was a slight glimpse of compassion from Casca to Gut just moment before Griffith made that grandeur speech to the Princess which lit the fires in Guts’s soul to find his own dream. Though I once pegged it as Casca just looking for her own brownie points to not think of how Griffith is wooing the Princess and not her. Followed by how Casca shows concern for him after she opened up a little of her past to him when they were in the cave. How worried she was of Guts, who’d stayed behind of his own violation to face many mercenaries alone and was still wounded from taking cross bolt shots, TWICE, for Casca. Then now here on this hill, she is treating his wounds and actually sitting back to LISTEN to Guts and not chew him out for his way of life. I’m sadden she was reduced to a potato when the Eclipse happen and am even more worried of what will happen next chapter of Bersek.
What a tremendous story a man with all the ambition in the world befriends a man with not a single trace of one. Drawn to each other Guts while having no ambition has the same strength of heart as Griffith, he can have whatever he wants the same way as Griffith, but wants noting. Guts is drawn to Griffith like a moth to a flame he wants to understand a man who wants something so bad he puts everything into making it a reality. Griffith while interested in Guts and sees himself also, uses Guts 1 because he needs his strength and 2 a man without any ambition is the prefect friend for a man with all the ambition, he will not betray him and will be at his side helping; But ironically by Guts being near Griffith the embers from Griffiths flame lit a small fire under Guts cause him to seek something. Griffith the man who plans and foresees everything is now betrayed by the one person he could trust and actually let in, while Guts wanted to seek his ambition Griffith couldn’t let Guts go due to him being his anchor. Griffith fights to keep his anchor but loses in a unforeseen way, which breaks the man who sees and plans all causing his flame to grow dimmer for the first time. As Griffith try’s to retain his flame he ends up making his problem worse causing his downfall. I mean it’s like scripture or something.
I’ve always wondered why I️ loved Berserk so dearly, and until recently I’ve realized I️ see a lot of Guts characteristics inside me. A Man who does not know his destiny, lives day by day without a purpose but to live the next. Admiring all the other dreams his friends and family have. This internal struggle is probably the most human experience you will ever have, find your fire my friends and make it blaze high and mighty
We all cast our flames into the bonfire of Miura’s dream, hoping that his great story might keep all of our flames burning. Thank you Miura for the most beautiful story I have ever read. It has been with me for 13 years, my whole adult life, and helped shape who I am today. I loved it for the aesthetics and sheer brutality as a teen, but now I love it for scenes like this and Farnese or Casca’s growth as characters. A slow-burning redemptive arc that shows violence and rage isn’t the answer. You can grit through it and sacrifice and change the lives of those around you. And even find love and friends again. If any mangaka on the planet was prepared for someone else to finish your story, it was you with your assistants. But you’ve already taught us most of the lessons we need. I’ll always wonder if Guts gets the upper hand, if he turns away from battle completely, or finds some kind of third path. But like Godo said, bright moments are like sparks that illuminate our lives and we are all looking for purpose. But this story is a beacon and a very bright spark amongst the din of battle that is our lives. We’re all strugglers and members of some great group that he influenced. Now it’s up to us to not let the joy in life and the flame of humanity go out.
After following the Berserk story I realized that one of the main themes is Dreams. But I could never figure out Gut’s dream. After perusal this numerous times I think Gut’s just want to get to a point where he can lay down his sword. And that being said he must kill Griffith, all the Apostles, and ultimately the God Hand.

This entire thing describes Dark Souls at it’s core. Casting one’s own flame into a fire to keep it from going out is the main plot of dark souls. The chosen undead kills legions of monsters to kindle the first flame. Only having your sword and fighting to survive impossible odds. Dark Souls is a very difficult game with the odds constantly stacked against you and everything is trying to kill you. Casca literally says “a bonfire of dreams”. The bonfires in dark souls are a provider of comfort and relief in a terrifying world. Fighting because you know nothing else. In dark souls, you can only avoid danger so much. You’re forced to face conflict head on and doing so makes you stronger. Berserk gave me my favorite game ever.
Yesterday I went through my first heartbreak. Me and this girl have been helping each other and laughing so hard with each other. Shes a genuinely amazing person. I cried when I heard her say she already has a bf. It bumped me out for two days but after talking to some family members who’ve been through much worse, I was finally able to move on from these feelings. Something I really like is how Guts not only remembers the names of his men but also is caring enough to listen to their stories, no matter how embarrassing or foolish they are for warriors in the Band of the Hawk. This is the same character who once was called a ‘mad dog’ for endangering his men recklessly. Bravo Miura. Your work will be remembered forever.
The parallels between Guts and Griffith are honestly astounding. To truly appreciate Golden Age Berserk, which I consider the best arc in manga, not just Berserk, you have to understand that neither Guts nor Griffith is ‘the villain’. You have to understand one was chosen by fate to be sacrificed, and the other chosen to become the sacrificer. Both are exceptional humans with no peers, both are flawed, and neither are ‘evil’ or ‘good’, but both have to potential to be such. The story is structured that, by fate, both Guts and Griffith had the qualities to be chosen as a Godhand, which Slan herself even explicitly states. Guts and Griffith are very similar in many ways, but also opposites in others. Neither understand what they mean to others. Guts leaves Griffith to forge his own path away from Griffith, but also throws away the loyalty of the men he cared about, and who cared about him, without even realizing it. Griffith also doesn’t understand what he means to his men, but in the complete opposite direction. He is narcissistic and delusional, to the point where he literally believes that people, especially his followers, don’t have their own dreams or ambitions, but are just sycophants content to ride his coattails to greatness. If not, they are simply obstacles towards that goal, people who’s only fault is being on the wrong side of his ‘dream’. He doesn’t understand that for most, he is a means to an end. He is someone they believe in, not for sake of his ‘dream’, but so that they can then fulfill their own dreams independent of Griffith’s.
These last 2 years have been fucking hell. Miura has passed away. Qinni had passed away. Covid has degraded people’s lives. Government discourse fuels more fucking bullshit. I moved to a new place away from family. My relationship is in tatters. My friendships are gone. These last 2 years have stripped everything. And now the manga that had helped me cope with life? The one that taught me to struggle against the hardships because with help… it gets easier? I was jumping in joy when the recent chapter was released. Now I’m here. Without family, friends, my partner, my home. Now, without Berserk and Miura.
I’m not that good with speeches or saying everything that I would like on the spot, but one thing that I can say is that Berserk will forever be a masterpiece, and although it will likely never be finished now, we will keep on struggling to the very end, just as Guts or you would have wanted. Thank you, truly, for all of your brilliant work and creations that you gave us for over the last 30 years Miura, may you rest in piece.
Holy shit I just realized the concept of adding your fire to a bigger one to tend the flames of everyone, and guts just being a passenger along those fires it’s the initial concept for the linking of the fire in darksouls, not only berserk inspired so much work of art and media, ideas like these MADE THEM. Rest in peace you beautiful legend, your legacy will live on forever
RIP Miura. It is just an idea but since Miura died, What about starting a movement that the fanbase creates its own ending and publishing it to reddit or any other website? One can decide which has the best ending. For instance if the particular end gets the higher vote, it is the most suitable ending for berserk, or you write your own ending and publish it so others can experience that ending.
Berserk is a story that teaches us about the struggles of finding purpose in life and realizing that anger can only lead us so far in life before we realize how empty our lives are without others. Miura Kentaro is not only one of the best manga artists, but also one of the best story writers! RIP Miura Kentaro. May his masterpiece live on forever.
I lived my young days as an optimist, always thinking that life is good even though I had struggles even then. Now, I’m 24 and just floating or fighting in this world without true purpose, always pushing my workouts to the absolute limit, almost wanting to die. Fighting imaginery 100 men, without thinking, completely focused. Living my life as Guts, never getting close to people, trusting almost no-one. I’m truly pathethic. Thanks Miura for creating this world where I could escape for years, feeling and living it through Guts, it strangely gave me purpose.
Just weeks ago I showed my younger sister the greatness that is Berserk after talking about it so much to her. She asked when the next chapter would be or new episodes to watch, just for days later Miura to pass and see her tears rush down her face. An amazing story with a comforting pain. RIP Kentaro. Your soul will live through us all, and through your pages of art. Rest Easy King
Ive seen people justify the eclipse by saying that the band of the hawk were all fighting for Griffith’s dream and had to accept that they could die reaching it. This scene is fundamental into why those people are wrong, this scene is why Griffith is wrong to think that the men in the band of the hawk don’t have their own dreams and thats why he couldn’t consider them friends. When those men put their pitch into Griffith’s bonfire to burn it brighter they didn’t cremate their own dreams by doing so, they vowed to achieve eachothers dreams and that seems to be something Griffith has either ignored or forgotten.
“Why do I always see things… after they’re done and gone?” – Guts, it’s a shame, Guts just felt like a tool when he overheard Griffifth’s conversation with Charlotte, so he vowed to just be his own man, in a way, Griffith was right, someone who can’t have their own goal, is someone stuck with not much purpose, but the hawks following Griffifth helped them realize their dreams, it’s just sad Guts didn’t realize it sooner, causing everything to go downhill
