“Santa Barbara content got trimmed.” I thought so! It really felt like we were going to go do another Seattle-worth of content on Santa Barbara. There were new enemies, new environment, new faction, new offensive concept (release the infected). It just felt like there was going to be more to it than “go to the cylindrical building, shoot a bunch of guys, and then fight Abby, game end.”
In regards to the nihilism of the game: If the building shown on the new game+ screen is a different building than the rattlesnake den and is in fact the casino on Catalina Island the implications for a Part 3 (or at least DLC) may change my whole perception of the themes of the story. If the Fireflies are based in that casino (and the well-kept flags indicate upkeep) then the game ends on a very optimistic note. Ellie may still have something of a dark road ahead of her but Lev & Abby might have found home. This would give plenty of opportunities for the characters to be brought back together in a way that gives resolution for all their stories. A tease for Part 3 could be right in front of us.
When I first got to this scene, my first impression was that it was a trap.. But the way the rattlers operate, it doesn’t seem plausible they’d set a trap like that. My theory; the game has been left open for a 3rd game but may not happen for some time. Neil Druckman has said he can’t see a reason yet to make a 3rd one. But with Abbey in the fireflies, maybe they’ll come after Ellie and try creating that vaccine finally? It would tie up the story nicely, with the world finally finding a cure..
I also did the same Google search and found Catalina Island and quite away from Santa Barbara. I think Abby and Lev were in the wrong place at the wrong time and got captured. I also think they purposely left a lot of details about the Rattlers in the dark to possibly set the stage for Abby to make a return to destroy the Rattler encampment in TLOU3 once her and Lev recover at the Fireflies base. The splash screen change at the beginning of the game confirms that Abby and Lev made it there after they escaped the Rattler slave camp.
The more time goes by… The more I accept the ending. I wanna see more about the fireflies and if Abby and Lev got there etc. I do dislike some parts of this game, and I was very mixed about Abby. But I lowkey just wanted Abby and Ellie to fucking TALK!! Like oh my god. I just wanted them both to live and to try and understand
i’m very happy to see that abby and lev made it to safety. i hated having to play as her at the beginning but the narrative parallel to joel and ellie in that final scene of both games of being carried away to safety is so harrowing. i hate perusal the cinematic of them getting caught by the rattlers. its very chilling. and we can all agree that slavery is one of the worst fates a person can end up in.
I know I’m late to the game (literally and figuratively), but I have immediate family in Santa Barbara, and I grew up in San Diego, so I’ve been to both spots many times in my life. Everything shown here indicates that the fireflies are actually still alive then. I had my doubts when I got to this part, only because it felt so obscured, but your breakdown actually convinced me. So Part III will take us to the island and possibly back to Santa Barbara? We’ve done the countryside thing now, and we’ve done the metropolitan thing…it makes sense to do a beach and island thing now 😁
After going through it, they are just a random, separate antagonist group for us to literally kill and mutilate before we get to the actual showdown. Felt like padding but not gonna lie, it was the most inventive and fun the combat/stealth scenarios ever really got to be satisfying and cool to pull off.
I think you’re right, re: the shots of the buildings being clearly different structures. I think it’s possible while the Fireflies do exist, the Rattlers could be monitoring the radiowaves and intercepting attempted Firefly stragglers within their own territory as a source of “strays”. I do think nihilism plays a huge role and component in the game itself, but I also think the narrative intended to leave the tiniest glimmer of hope left, for both Abby and Ellie. Ellie’s end we see portrayed in her return to the farmhouse as she seems to take stock of her personal losses, though its own subject. With Abby’s fate, it seems like her punishment wasn’t merely just however long she’d spent tied on the pillars waiting to die of exposure, but that, of all her 7 or 8 friends who traveled with her to help her get her personal vengeance on Joel, all of them are dead. Abby herself remains alive for her to contemplate those losses. But, both of them seem to be left alive through a critically marginal amount of mercy that occurs because of the presence of Lev. Abby stops short of murdering Dina who’s pregnant only because of Lev. Ellie stops just short of killing Abby telling her to leave with Lev. I think this can be interpreted to mean that, although nihilism almost wins out in the end, there is that “candle in the darkness”.

First of all, I have been loving these articles after finishing the game. Thanks for helping to fill in some details that I missed while playing. I’m familiar with Catalina island. The casino is the most recognizable building on the island and I completely agree with your thoughts. I do not believe that the person on the radio was a rattler, but was indeed a firefly. It makes sense that they would tell Abby and Lev to head to the casino, as it would be visible from the ocean and would let Abby know where to dock. To me, the main menu change after completing the game is the confirmation that Abby and Lev successfully made it safely to the island and regrouped with the surviving fireflies.
Can I just mention, Idk why people are giving the story of the game so much shit. Just because they feel Ellie’s journey is pointless because she lets Abby go? Um news flash The journey of TLOU 1 was pointless too because Joel Slaughtered the fireflies and stopped the cure. i would have thought that the person on the other end of the mic would have atleast told abby about the rattlers, cause if the fireflies have been at that island, they would have to eventually come off the island to the mainland to look for some supplies and have run into the rattlers, you would possibly tell someone of a danger like that out there to be careful of if they are looking to come to your place.
I have been to Catalina island. It’s an hour long boat ride. It’s barely visible from the mainland just before the curvature of the earth would set it past that view. There’s no possible way Ellie could’ve seen the Catalina casino from the mainland and especially not as large as it was from her viewpoint. The large round building and the large domed building are two completely separate buildings
I agree with your whole analysis, as someone who lives in Southern California and has been to Catalina Island, my sole disagreement would be that you can’t take too much away from Abby and Lev going off at the end in that little motorboat. Catalina is a good couple of hours off the coast in faster boats and the swells can get pretty big, I have doubts that two people in a little motorboat with whatever limited fuel it has could make it there in that.
I think the ending of the first game let some questions open, but it was good and didn’t need a sequel. No matter how they would’ve written the story, it would have had some sort of flaws. I personally would’ve preferred watched how the lore continues: What happens with FEDRA, are people still looking for a cure. Etc.
I agree, when I first played it I didn’t think they were the same people. He clearly says the building is in a different place (get to Catalina Island) and then calls her “Abby from Santa Barbara” implying they are not in Santa Barbara where she is. If they were in Santa Barbara they would’ve said something like “Oh really? We’re actually here, just come to the round building down the street” or something.
I agree. My theory for part 3: What’s supposed in this article is true, they join the fireflies and at some point Ellie wants to make something out of her immunity and searches for the remnants of the fireflies, hoping for a better outcome this time. The ending of part 2 suggests she hasn’t much left in life she cares for and is kind of a loner now, not sure what to expect from the rest of her life besides bare survival, so she might as well chase bigger goals. Would make it easy to construct a redemption arc for both characters. And i guess my theory isn’t even that outlandish and i am not the only one thinking of a scenario like this.
I just beat the last of us part 2 yesterday for the first time. I wanted to ask you guys some questions I had while playing this game. I know Joel died for killing Abby’s dad, but Joel saved Abby’s life. Couldn’t Joel told her friends that Abby would be dead if he and Tommy didn’t save her ? I was upset with Tommy for giving Ellie a guilt trip because she didn’t want to go. She is suffering from PTSD. I know for me I suffer from PTSD my dad was evil he tried to murder me. He forced me to watch he almost slit my mom’s throat Infront of me. I was 6 yrs old at that time. I know I try to avoid any triggers. I saw Ellie was suffering from PTSD as well. Ellie could have died because of Tommy’s guilt trip. He destroyed Ellie and Dina’s happy life at their farmhouse. Tommy should have let it go. She already killed Abby’s friends. I could see a the last of us of part 3.. the fireflies now wanting too hunt Ellie for a vaccine and Abby being conflicted because Ellie spared her life. The two work together and Ellie grows a small bond with lev bc he reminds her of her younger self. Tommy then comes after Abby & Ellie returns the favor. I could see them also dealing with the rattlers again🧐 just a little speculation / concept. Ps. I loved the game, me being a huge TLOU fan.. Joel’s death affects me but not to the point Where I hate the game, I understand both parties and where they come from
The circular roof at the Rattlers base is lifted from the real life Santa Barbara County Courthouse complex — same architectural style. Would make sense for there to be holding cells there. Also, Catalina is amazing. I sailed there once in college via a “learn how to sail” maritime course. Sailed a sloop there through some mild rainy weather out of Long Beach. Captain turned on some classical music at one point while I was at the wheel and some dolphins were keeping pace with us. Had to obey all of the right-of-way rules when we came across a huge container ship in the website, iirc. One of my great life experiences.

This is a great breakdown and analysis. I debated the same thing when completing the game, but eventually sided with the fact the menu screen changes after finishing the game to potentially set the stage for a third game. Though the story is riddled with pacing issues and forced story branches that aren’t satisfying, the attention to detail is unlike any game I’ve played before, and it’s safe to say the image of the building in the new menu screen was purposeful. If a third game is green lit, it could hold redemption for the series and bring it all home, much like how the “Uncharted” series had a satisfying finale.
The thing about the Fireflies is people keep saying they’re all dead at the end of the first game but Joel and Ellie are still being chased by like 10 or more guys out of the building until they get to the garage where they see Marlene. Also, the Fireflies were consisted of more than just soldiers, so people would have been hidden away if they were told someone was shooting up the place. Yes, Joel had shot a large amount of people, but we can see from the end of the first game and when Abby sees her dad in the second game that technically there was still a number of fireflies left. Abby and “the Salt Lake Crew” had either been forced to leave or had collectively decided to go. And the Fireflies’ mission was partially to get rid of the Fedra (of course there was more to it but I can’t type out the whole thing). So once they moved out of Boston, they didn’t have any reason to go to Seattle since the Fedra was already gone unless they were trying to recruit more people. Which brings me to another point, the Fireflies had to recruit people which means traveling; so they could have split up in order to try and recruit more people. This would lead to outposts, connections, and the radio signals. By stopping at house they could see if it had some sort of radio, leave behind its frequency and then travel and leave it in other places which would allow for the group to grow and then collect together at Catalina Island. Basically to summarize everything here: the people on the radio were more than likely Fireflies
My prediction if there is a part 3: A) Part 3 would reference the first game, as this game story was disappointing B) More likely some some WLF members would take revenge on Abby C) Lev becomes Part 3, Probably Ellie and Abby dies, Maybe Lev goes inland to look after Ellie mrs child and becomes the Father figure like Joel
I live in Los Angeles and have been to Catalina island many times. The ending menu screen is Catalina island. The one thing that dose not make sense is that. Santa Barbara is a 1 hour and 30min drive with no traffic from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. There is absolutely no way abbey and lev could have made it to Catalina island from Santa Barbara in that kind of boat with out running out of gas and being stranded. I’m pretty sure that there aren’t any fairies that depart from Santa Barbara to Catalina. They only depart from Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point. Dana Point is near San Diego. San Pedro and Long Beach are next to each other and there both apart of Los Angeles County. It takes an hour on the Catalina Express to get to the island from San Pedro or Long Beach.
We need a Last of Us 3. to follow up on Abby and Lev’s story to see where the fireflys are, see Ellie go back to jackson and confront Dina and see JJ grown up a bit, then Ellie somehow gets back involved with Abby and the fireflies and they find a doctor that studied under Abby’s father. He has the power to make a vaccine, Ellie willingly makes the choice to sacrifice herself like she wanted to, completing Abby’s father’s legacy and saving Mankind.
I live across from Catalina and have taken several trips using the Catalina Express. Although you can’t see it from the main land (because of the curvature of the Earth) the building in the start menu IS the casino in Avalon. Even though I have not been to Santa Barbara, the dome building Ellie fights in is NOT the same as the casino building on Catalina. On a side note, I don’t think Abby & Lev could have made it in a straight shot from Santa Barbara to Catalina in the boat they took off in. They would have had to make refueling stops along the way sticking close to the shore. Including San Pedro, it’s got a decent sized marina, and maybe Fireflies are stationed at the marine traffic control or possibly the radio domes on top of P.V. Hills. That’s my theory any way.
Maybe in part 3. Ellie went to find Abby again as she has lost everything and wanted to give her life to make the cure again. Maybe the Rattlers will returned to get their revenge as we have not seem the LEADER of the Rattlers yet ( I don’t think we have ) – The Rattlers want revenge but find out about the cure which they want to destroy or keep for themself. – Fireflies gose to war with the Rattlers. – Ellie caught in the middle of the war while trying to find Abby and the Fireflies. – The victor is Fireflies. – Before Ellie died, Abby expressed that she’s wrong to get revenge and kill Joel in the past. Abby also realize that her father would have done the same for her if Abby was the one whose immune. – Ellie looks with saddness, she wanted to forgive Abby as she know that what Joel did in the past is wrong. But she can’t. – Abby looks at Lev and the firefiles. She see her father spirit. She took a deep long breath, look at dying Ellie and say softly ” Hope you find him ” – Ellie passed away. – Abby successfully crafted the sample of the cure. – In the end, we see Dina reading letter from Ellie, saying that she’s a no body. She lost everything included herself. Expressing that revenge game is stupid and senseless. Ellie say that she will find the firefiles with Abby again. But this time is different, she not there to kill them but to give her life to them to make a cure. – Dina cry as she read the last two sentence ” You won’t see me again. After I leave, I will be joining him; to be with him again – LOVE Ellie ” – ” Him ” is referring to Joel.
Other people have probably confirmed it, but I live on California mainland right by Catalina island — you could see the island from my elementary school on clear days. I knew immediately that they were talking about the casino when a dome building on Catalina was mentioned. And I knew immediately that the domed building we were shown was not the casino. The area around it is just not what Catalina looks like at all.
UCSB grad. The Resort is definitely SB. We first see the intersection of Constance and De Mar. Constance is a real street in Upper Santa Barbara, De Mar seems to be made up so as not to give a real intersection. Great touch on the street signs, which are very unique out there (brown with white lettering). Then we jump to Ellie and start at the beach. She pushes into Downtown SB, and gets to the Santa Barbara Amtrak station (pretty much exact same building as in the game). From the station, if you follow the track, that’ll lead you to a resort… the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort. Same architecture and building style. Only problem is no tall round building. However, there is a huge open air rotunda that a designer looking for inspiration on google maps could easily make into the building we see in the game.
I have been to Avalon and the Casino there (it’s an old theater that holds live performances, as well as silent movies to modern movies, it’s called a Casino because it’s the Italian word for Theater) and from what I’m able to tell, it IS the same building as the title screen as the actual building too is built overlooking the water. Besides, with Catalina Island being between a.1.5 hour – 2 hour boat ride from Los Angeles (and that’s with the boats they have today) it would seem to be the beat place for the Fireflies to rebuild. Its isolate, mountainous, and would be an easy area to defend having only 2 major ports in Avalon and Two Harbors
if you look at a map, the most obvious “domed building” in avalon is the diving history exhibit which is definitely not the what the rattlers domed building was. the diving exhibit also looks to be in a similar position as the building from the ending title screen in terms of how close it is to the shore.
the rattlers 100% intercepted that radio message and catalina island did in fact have the fireflies. this is where the last of us 3 should kick off. Abby is one of the only living people on earth that knows about ellies immunity. its possible someone else there was at salt lake hospital who also knows and after finding out abby has been in contact and knows where ellie lives, a portion if not all of the other fireflies there might try to go to jackson to grab ellie in their haste to find a cure(assuming someone besides abbys dad does in fact know how to make a cure), but abby may start to feel guilt at that thought and who knows what would happen from there, another rivalry against ellie or side with her where the two start to eventually talk about their pasts and come to a personal acceptance. idk, all i know is tlou3 anywhere between 2023-2028, ill be waiting
It’s very likely that the guy Abby traded a gun with for the information may have been leading her into a trap, and didn’t expect for her to actually come into contact with them. Like a half-truth, because it was an outpost at one point. The trader would likely also know of the Rattlers and didn’t warn her.
yeah this seems like just some mild confusion on the part of players combined with the fact that some people have pointed out that Abby and Lev had been in the area before for the Rattlers to track. The Rattlers seem like a play on groups of “hunters” or slavers you sometimes see in post apocalyptic stories/games. I got the impression that the Fireflys were supposed to be maybe the one true source of hope in the game
I don’t understand why the fireflies don’t do anything about the rattlers when they’re nearby. With so many potential firefly members falling trap to the rattlers you would think the fireflies in catalina would venture inland to stop the rattlers. I find it hard to believe that they don’t know the rattlers exists. The rattlers seem to be pretty infamous around the area. They said they were 200 strong on the radio. They definitely had more than enough people to take out the rattler outpost while ellie did it alone. Also why wouldn’t the guy on the radio send out a search party for abby? After she just mentioned her location and that she is going to meet them. She also confirmed that she is a firefly from the salt lake group. The fireflies sat around for god knows how long while all these people were getting enslaved and tortured to death. Owen obviously heard of the firefly existence somehow meaning they are recruiting. Don’t they feel somewhat responsible for people falling into the hands of the rattlers while those people were seeking out the fireflies? On a side note! I’ve been to avalon before. Went that round casino building and went 30 feet underwater scuba diving. They have an underwater dive park with murals and stuff at the bottom. Very cool!
What came to my mind is that the rattlers seemed to turn up pretty quick to abbys location directly after her radio conversation almost Asif if it was them on the other side, which led me to believe that it was almost a setup, whoever gave her the tip that she traded her pistol for.. So whoever gave her that tip is probably working with the rattlers?
I live in California and have been to Santa Barbara several times and Catalina Island two times. They are nowhere near each other. Ellie could not have walked there in the same day while wounded from a tree. They just happen to be two round buildings. Also, the round building in Santa Barbara looks more like a hotel or resort. The round building on Catalina Island is a casino/theater, not a place to stay. Also, before Ellie infiltrates the base, she passes by a train and tracks. As far as I know, there are no trains on Catalina Island.
I think it’d be cool if naughty dog dropped a dlc like left behind but for this it’d just have more of Santa Barbara. Like maybe a day or so of Abby & Lev prior to their capture &/or their captivity where they try to escape which leads to them being tied up on the beach. Tbh idk what Ellies part would be about tho in this dlc scenario. Any ideas?
I don’t think it was that confusing considering that while the dialogue may have sounded similar, the description of the buildings are in fact different, purely in the sense of one key detail. The firefly operator mentions that their building is domed, not just round. The rattler den is not a domed building, given it’s 2 tier style roof. Other than the fact that they are on Catalina Island, and that Neil confirmed that they made it, I think the distinction was clear enough.
I thought that it would have been cool if the Rettlers were in fact what was left of the fireflies, and they just went rogue and became a group of slavers. That would have been a pretty cool twist in my view. This section of the game is so short, yet there is so much detail and info in it I’m really curious about what was cut. or what we may see in Part 3
There’s no question that the two buildings are indeed unrelated. Santa Barbara has numerous buildings in this style which has been coined Santa Barbara style Spanish revival. This style is prominent throughout Southern California including Catalina Island. The Rattlers seem to have multiple ways of trapping victims which include patrolling along that street where both Abby and Ellie are lead to with the address clue.
I’ve lived in southern California most of my life and vacationed in Avalon on Catalina island more than once. The rattler headquarter building in Santa Barbara, while similar looking, is not the Catalina casino that the Fireflies are supposedly based in. As soon as I saw the end screen change from the boat alone in the water to the boat on the beach with the casino in the background I knew for sure that Lev and Abby made it to Catalina. The only thing that doesn’t really make sense is the perspective of the boat docking on a sandy beach looking at the casino to the south west, when in reality the casino is out on a small peninsula jutting to the north east. There really is no way that this would be possible, as a simple google maps search will show, the realistic way to dock on Catalina in a boat would be to come ashore south west of the casino and be looking at it from a southern perspective, or reverse of what is shown on the title screen.
I wonder if VGS ever got down to making the article behind Isaac’s climb to the leadership role of the WLF. A article in the Scares would be really cool too. I hope the remaster that’s coming out in January has more information on the rattlers. I kinda hope that part gets extended, or maybe some added story. There’s son talk about a Part III too.
The evidence seems pretty clear. Although I disagree that it is a mistake, the planned content could have been Abby and Lev making their way to Catlina Island after their encounter with Ellie. I think the dialogue is actually a deliberate red herring, the player is suppose to think “oh it was the rattlers on the radio, and it was a trap. The fireflies are actually all gone.”
The annoying part of that movie is that it was not filmed on Catalina. That being said, being able to visit the island ( on normal non-pandemic circumstances) I can see how plausible for the fireflies to set up on Avalon because it’s a nice sea side village and plenty of wildlife to hunt cause there’s bison on the island. 20 miles off the coast is a nice distance as well for protection
After 6 months or more of no contact, it’s more than likely that the supposed Fireflies figured that Abby was killed on the way. There’s a good chance that Abby and Lev will show up to an abandoned building and have to find clues to learn where the Fireflies moved to. Similar to Joel and Ellie at the University. Go Big Horns
This is really what I think when I watch the scene about Rattlers attacking Abby at 2425 Constance. The way the first man attack Abby is very surprising since they already knew Abby was there. So I suspect that those Frequencies they get was indeed a trick??? But after I watch this article, it feels clear to me now. It’s really the Fireflies who contact them. 😱 I bet the part III will be about the resurrection of Fireflies out of the ashes and it’s very interesting to see.
I had taken a school trip to Catalina Island when I was in jr high. That picture on the menu screen after u beat the game is definitely Catalina Island, looks exactly like the place I took a school trip to. And it most definitely is not the same place as the one Ellie infiltrates in Santa Barbara. I def think remnant of Fireflies are stationed in Catalina Island and Abby and Lev finally found them
Long story short if there is Fireflies on Catalina Island and is a set up for Part 3, I can see that Abby needs to find Ellie bc they have a doctor that can make the vaccine that was talked about in Part 1 and it would tie everything up including Ellie’s life and her immunity “meaning something” because of all those that died for her in her life.
In the radio transmission the alleged firefly asked Abby some things about where she knew them from, I don’t remember exactly but it was something like, oh yeah, who she served with or under and she says Dr Jerry I guess, her dad, only then they show trust enough to tell her where they are and sound quite thrilled as if they were very familiar with who she was talking about. Now, this could always be deceive, but like, if they were guys trying to lure people into their camp, what sense does it make to demonstrate suspicion and ask stuff? It’s the same as with keeping the frequencies hidden, it only goes against them. Besides the guy in the radio just sounded legit to me, idk, it never occured to me that they could be the same people as her captors. It looked like she had a pretty long way to get to the fireflys, so they shouldnt be that close. On the other hand, when Abby is freed by Ellie she says “there are boats out there” I don’t remember where that was. But it sounded to me like she would assume Ellie also needs a boat. Why else would she mention? And why would Ellie go to the boats if she wasn’t going to cross any water? So she must’ve been on water before while searching for Abby. Also, I don’t think the real life locations is relevant, I’m pretty sure they didn’t depict Seattle accurately, I don’t think the game depicts authentic locations despite using the name of real cities, unlike the GTA francise. In sum, I’m very curious. I hope theres a part 3 and I’d hope Abby made it.
I don’t think it’s poor narrative design. I think it was designed for the player to question whether or not this was a trap. If it had been a trap, they would have simply directed them to the rattler compound and not some other location like Catalina Island. The player is supposed to be confused because of the rattler’s description of the building where Abby is being held. But since Santa Barbara is not Catalina Island, astute players should be questioning this the entire time. The ending screen finally gives us confirmation because it is in fact the Avalon at Catalina Island, suggesting Abby and Lev made it there. Only curious players who want to know the answer will take the time to look this up though.
Well there has to be some fire flies. Joel didn’t kill ‘em all. He ran from some at the end. They were chasing him while he was holding Ellie right? Also more proof is when Ellie goes back to Utah and finds the tape recorder in part 2 a fire fly was talking about some going after Joel and some not. So no Joel did not kill them all.
My theory is that this was pure opportunism by the Rattlers, not an elaborate trap. It’s not unreasonable that they’d have hand held radios or walkie talkies so they pick up Abby broadcasting, on a whim decide to play along to get her to give up a location. She gives them an exact address which is within walkie talkie range which is close enough that 2 minutes is long enough for the rattlers to get in position to ambush them.
Definitely Catalina in the final menu screen. The island is 99% wilderness with only 2 main ports, and the Casino building is dead-on. I’ve been there a few times. In fact, Catalina is a great place to retreat to in a zombie apocalypse lol. Kinda wish the final showdown was fighting through Avalon instead of Santa Barbara, would have been way cooler.
I also wondered if that Firefly call was really. But I rather thought of a group of Hunters or something in gerneral. Because they wanted her to go to Catalina Island and it to my sounded like a trap. But would be a strange trap for Catalina Island being not easy to reach . So not many victims for that I guess. But anyways the Rattlers where in Santa Barbara and a total different group

They used the same concept about the building being round to make us think it was a trap from the rattler and there’s no firefly until the ending main menu screen change into the catalina island and explain it was true after all. soon in tlou3, i hope the story would be much more entertaining about factions rather than protagonist personal problems.
Some remarks on the article. I don’t think the rattlers set up the radio as a trap because it was hidden behind a closet. Also there was a secret living area under that home and it was not used by the rattlers. But the rattlers could have listened to the radio while it was broadcasting, and then they found Abby and Lev, that could be possible. Second thing, I think the round buildings are similar for a reason. It made me think about hope an defeat for some reason. I mean Abby is so hopefull to get to catalina Island to that round building and than she lands in an other round building of torture. But they are definitely not the same building and Ellie goes back home with her boat and not to catalina island, so they obviously made it.
Reading comments about how they won’t come out with a DLC for The Last Of Us: Part II. That all might change, it might not. Sometimes people say this one thing won’t happen and when plans changes, it does happen. Though like I did say, it might not happen. Or they won’t come out with a DLC for The Last Of Us: Part II and instead make a Part III. Though they might not do that. As stated in a wiki for The Last Of Us: Part II, Neil Druckmann hasn’t yet decided if his next game will be The Last Of Us: Part III, or a brand new IP. What I believe were that the fireflies are indeed still alive, and that the call between Abby and the man was a actual genuine conversation, and that the rattlers some how managed to intercept the frequency for the call and managed to trap it, I might be wrong but this is just what I think. But the timeline is that when Abby was caught it was a few months prior to when Ellie went to find Abby. So that can take into an idea that the Rattlers might’ve been trying to kill the fireflies during that time, or just the fact that it was a abandoned base.
ok, so this is what you guys don’t understand. It was a trap once she got on the radio, but the radio itself was not a trap. The Rattlers didn’t know about the radio, and the only reason they got there so fast was probably because they were already close to the area after being notified by the guy Abby communicated with. This confirms that the Fireflies are no more. ND made sure to make this clear by making both the guy on the radio and fat Geralt say large round domed building. I initially thought how you guys are, but what I’m saying now is right. It was certainly a trap. perhaps they were once Fireflies, but now they are Rattlers, and so they use that as an advantage to trap, recruit, or slave. Yet another possible negative chain reaction of Joel’s choice to save Ellie. Not saying it’s all Joel’s fault, they made their own choice, as Joel made his.
Yeah everything points to the Fireflies being legit and not some elaborate trap set by the Rattlers. Plus even if it was a trap, how many people would they actually lure in? First they’d need to hear the rumor that they’re reforming, then they’d need to care enough about rejoining that they actually follow the lead, then they need to somehow not only find the address(Abby had to trade a gun for it) but figure out there’s a hidden door. Seems like a whole lot of work for a few suckers, if that. Plus the idea of the Fireflies returning makes too much sense in terms of Part 3. My theory is that they reform because they found another doctor who can perform the surgery. The game revolves around Ellie trying to find her purpose/life after Joel that isn’t centered around revenge, and Abby dealing with the conflict of wanting to finish her fathers work while also wanting Ellie to be able to live in peace. Along the way though Lev gets bit and, who would have thought: he’s immune. Once the Fireflies learn of this they call off their search for Ellie and decide to perform the surgery on Lev, but now Abby is left in the same boat as Joel – and surprise – she does the same thing Joel did.
If the hideout indeed belonged to the Fireflies, then why isn’t there any memo or logo of the Fireflies? The purpose of the radio call is to overjoy the survivors and give them hope so that they lower their guard when they exit the house, making them easier to capture by the Rattlers that have been hiding in a nearby house. The door was probably shut in order to keep the infected outside of the basement. The guy on the radio didn’t even introduce himself, we have no proof he’s indeed a Firefly, he could be anyone and anywhere (for example, a Rattler in a neighboring house giving the signal to his friends). And for all we know, Abby and Lev made it to the island yeah, but they could have been killed by another group of Rattlers there.
I bet the Fireflies still exist and Abby will find them in Part 3. Only now she is grown up and she has seen what the world really is and will probably realize that the Fireflies are full of shit. It is implied many times in Part 1 and 2 and even Owen, who was a high-ranked Firefly says that they are no different than The Wolfs or Seraphytes. In fact all those fractions fight for, is for control over what is left of civilization and will have it its own way or no way at all. So I think Part 3 will be about Abby seeing that the Fireflies are just the same militarizes group as the others fractions and will realize that if they make the cure, it will just empower them, so they can use it as a weapon of control. Meanwhile Ellie will still be somewhat compelled by the idea to sacrifice her life for a cure, so it will be Abby who will stop her and convince her it is no use. Thus making a full circle, realizing that her father was just a dreamer in a world, where no one cares about the good of humanity. Ironically, it will be Abby, who will save Ellie at the end.
I figure the guys on the radio called in to his rattler buddies BUT there just happened to ALSO be some rattlers in the area who heard Abby & Lev. That way, no matter what Abby would have been hunted down & possibly captured by the rattlers even IF none were nearby. If I was running a slave ring, I’d consider this to be a very lucky circumstance. Think about it: you have rattlers on constant patrol & radios as traps set all around the area for said patrols to go to & if need be send backup where you need them to go. Santa Barbara is great place to live. The city is known for some great seafood as well as its Spanish culture and architectural designs. I felt right at home while playing this part of the game. Santa Barbara is a great place to live. It was also nice to see it reclaimed by nature, fucked to shit, and infected ruined the houses. Looked good. Felt good. Looked nice. Beach was nice. I loved the palm trees 🌴. Those are great trees. I just kept running around them again and again cause it was low key exciting to be in Santa Barbara while playing post apocalyptic Santa Barbara. The Rattlers were nasty people, but the old fat guy personality was chill. As is most people’s personality’s in Santa Barbara, California. It would have been so dope to go thru the University of Santa Barbara like we did in the first game with Colorado’s university. I would have loved to see Los Angeles & San Diego have some dope ass game play time. Seattle was fucked. I wonder how fucked the City of Angeles was. Prolly really fucked. San Diego prolly wouldn’t fair better. Cities and all and with a fungal outbreak that takes over your mind, yeah shitty mess. Great article game design of the city, felt right at home! 🏡
I believe that the rattlers would of been a subdivision of the fireflies. They would be more of the “extremists” type but could be a group meant to find other members to fully revive the group. Doesn’t mean the fireflies wanted anything to do with abby either at that point. They could of had the radio there for scavengers or looters to communicate with homebase if something went wrong, or if they found something really valuable. I was more so surprised with the lack of collectibles from the rattlers than not, since normally we would of found something hinting us who the rattlers were, and what they were about. I can’t wait to see if abby and Lev were ok and what type of organization the fireflies grew to become over the years
I think the fireflies exist and this feeds into the overall theme of redemption. There are two islands in the game. Lev and Abby escape the Seraphite Island. Biblically, the Seraphim were punitive, firey angels… described as “a blazing fire, like a mighty flame” (Song of Solomon 8:6). You know the Seraphites love a Molotov. Lev, presumably, finds redemption on the Firefly island. FIRE, again…on an Island far removed from the North West Coast. We are shown FIRE as destruction vs FIRE as illumination. This is the duality of humanity! Revenge vs Forgiveness. I think the game is purposeful in its message.
Sorry but I really do think the Rattlers had nothing to do with the Fireflies, and they probably didn’t even know about the radio in the basement, which is why they didn’t leave the door open, they just happen to intercept the transmission and were just surprised that their next slave was going to be a former Firefly. It was totally unexpected on their part which was why they didn’t respond right away on the radio but still asked Abby her location.
I don’t think the rattlers are fireflies, I think that may have been an old hideout for them on their way to Catalina, but the rattlers came in and took over, maybe it was an old firefly outpost and the rattlers killed whatever fireflies were there while the rest of them are at Catalina The rattlers don’t seem like they’ve been there for very long, everything is just out on tables like they’re taking inventory, they only have like what, a dozen slaves? Someone left a note that said they were leaving and coming back with friends, could be fireflies and they haven’t gotten the message yet I think we still haven’t seen the last of the fireflies Also, I looked it up, the domed building on Catalina Island is a casino, the domed building in the game did not seem like a casino to me, more like a mansion
One of the frequencies on the list that Abby was using was named “Big Sur”. When you go in the main Rattler building as Ellie, Big Sur is on the wall. If it wasn’t The Rattlers on the radio, the developers sure made a hard core attempt to lead people in that direction…. IMO it was The Rattlers, not The Fireflies. The voice on the other end never proved he was a Firefly because Abby didn’t test him, which was foolish. Also, she got the information about the house from someone she traded a pistol to. She handed up the information that she was looking for Fireflies to a stranger and they used that information for a trap. Kinda like Joel getting his head caved in with a golf club because he told strangers his real name…. The lesson learned in TLOU2 is….. NEVER GIVE INFORMATION TO STRANGERS IN THE F’ING APOCALYPSE!
great article. I truly think that the last of us 3 will be solely on Abby and Lev making it to the fireflies and Abby telling them about Ellie and the whole group going after Ellie for a cure. I think that would make a great 3rd game. But obviously I want more of a Ellie story line. I just rally hope Naughty Dog doesn’t make there fans wait 7 more years.

I liked this part of the game. They followed the original and made these people indisputable monsters, like the Hunters, Bandits, and Stragglers from the original. We watched them all do horrible things and were happy to deal with them. The Saraphites, WLF… not so much. They convoluted the storyline and got us attached to characters we shouldn’t have. By the time we had seen their side of things and the good things they’ve done, we didn’t want to see Abby die anymore. And that’s just sad. It really messed up the story of the game.
To everyone saying it wasn’t a trap, it definitely was. If you actually look into the game, the Rattler’s have been there from the beginning. It’s their hometown. And when you play the Ellie the dome is the jail cell. There were never fireflies there. And they can be manipulative. Just like when the older rattler said that Abby’s in the jail cell, when she wasn’t.
They would be in close proximity to the rattlers if so and they would most likely not be “good” people anyways. There would no doubt be conflict between the fireflies and the rattlers unless they have some mutual agreement or whatever but if the fireflies are still a thing then they would totally take down the rattlers, maybe? I just don’t see these two groups coexisting in peace without one taking over the other. I think there are just more rattlers there and Abby and Lev just got killed or re-enslaved in the end anyways.
I think they are alive. Ellie is all alone by herself and i think she is going to find fireflies for vaccine this time. So yeah in pt2 we saw joel’s death and in pt3 we will see ellie’s death/suicide. Maybe lev can die or she is immune too and this time abby choose what to do just like joel idk it’s naughty dog i don’t trust them
The Last of Us Part III:Grave of the Fireflies (yes like the animated movie) plot:Fireflies fuck it up with Ellie … again maybe get Dina or JJ hurt or killed as they for some reason either set up bombs in Jackson like the terrorists they are or try a full scale attack,and Ellie goes to exterminate them screaming “This one is for Joel motherfuckers” as she performs glorykills on them Doom guy style and final battle Ellie vs Abby and Lev. Or maybe Fireflies also screw Abby over kill Lev or something and she teams up with Ellie and those 2 end up together at the end Lesbomancy style.
The man on the radio was absolutely a Rattler, in fact he’s credited as Rattler Prison Leader. He was bluffing when he asked who the bosses at the Salt Lake QZ were. He only wanted Abby’s location, and he absolutely sent the Big Rattler and Little Rattler duo there. This isn’t even ambiguous, it’s an obvious plot point.
Let’s not forget that Neil is working on the live action series to come out on HBO MAX. So with that being said, if a 3rd part story is developed and written it won’t happen for many many years. Possibly another 5-7yrs. The live action series will take over the game series I believe. It wouldn’t make sense for them to make a live series that follows the game story and then make a 3rd game only to film a live series of the same story AGAIN. So I really feel like the live action series will take over the story in the future, unless the live series doesn’t take off for some reason. Either way I think Neil is too far deep into this narrative that I think he’s really going to try to wrap it up with a final installment to the story, whether it’s another game for the ps5 (around the end of life of ps5) or picking up the story through the live series, TLOU story deserves to be finished and it’ll be nice if it had a happy ending. With Abby finding Catalina Island, it’s gives us hope that Abby will now try to complete her father’s work with Firefly support. I don’t think it’s the last time we’ll be playing with Abby and Ellie. Ellie still wants her life to matter, and given a 2nd opportunity to right Joel’s wrong, she’ll give her life for a cure. At least that’s the general plot a 3rd installment could have.
I disagree that Abby and Lev were heading for the Catalina island. They spent months going down the coast looking for fireflies. Then the moment Abby told the mysterious man in the radio their location, they were ambushed and captured as slaves. Co-incidentally the slave manor had a big dome building, just like the man in the radio described. If they were not born yesterday, they would have seen the connection and realized that it was a rattler they had contacted, not the firefly. The article said it’s only 2 minutes from the radio to the door. I think this is obviously a misconception. The game doesn’t give you a specified timeline in this. Abby could have spent 30 minutes in that building, exploring and finding all the loots. At the same time, rattlers nearby could have come in and set the trap in 5 minutes.
In my honest opinion I’ve just finished the game and loved it, however I’d prefer a TOOL soundtrack throughout play 😂. I think they’ll follow more along the lines of the Metal Gear franchise, reason being Ellie’s parents how was she immune etc. Also will Abby go back to try and capture Ellie? It’s anyone’s guess.
Spoiler alert, it wouldn’t surprise me if Marlene was still alive. There has been other small factions depending on where the main characters go, but since the beginning the Fireflies has always been continental. They will make a comeback, and possibly make Ellie’s vaccination worth something which I don’t want to see..
I wonder why rattlers their suits some of them called Police lol are they hidden military after killing them using their outfits plus the way they talk very similar to fedra organised ….theh r slavery gang remids me too of robert s hunters …sure they arent fireflies no way to be Part 3 on hold should be coming to complete the story cz theres many secrets to know This game is just great in everything
Great so Ellie loses her father, her fingers (the ability to play music or effectively kill), her girlfriend and her baby, her future while Abby gains her life, with her Lev AND she joins the fireflies ???? Makes ZERO sense because both of them were on a path to vengeance but Abby got everything and Ellie lost everything. Such shitty writing and bad attempt at making it appear poetic. They tried this cycle of vengeance with Tess in part 1 ending but it was bad so they abandoned it.. shouldve stayed abandoned …
